InVEST Reports: new feature in version 3.18.0

With the release of InVEST 3.18.0, we introduce a new feature called InVEST Reports. “Reports” are visual summaries of model results, including maps, plots, tables, and descriptions, that are viewable from the Workbench or in a web browser.

Over the past year, we surveyed and interviewed a number of InVEST users to find out what people do after running an InVEST model, and we designed this new feature to address some common needs. We expect Reports to benefit InVEST users in several ways,

  • Make it easier to quickly assess the validity of model results
  • Make it clear to beginners what the primary model outputs are and how to interpret them
  • Reduce some tedium for people who do lots of model iterations and need to visualize the results each time
  • Provide examples of how to visualize outputs, including figures people can re-use or take inspiration from

As of the 3.18.0 release, reports are available for Carbon, Coastal Vulnerability, SDR, and NDR models. Over the coming months we plan to develop and release reports for more InVEST models.

Feedback & Sharing

We would especially like to hear feedback from users about this new feature. One great way to provide feedback is to share your report with us, so that we can we see how it performs with your unique data. To share a report, all you need to do is share the <model_name>_report.html file from your output workspace. However, this forum, and other services like email, may not accept .html files as attachments, in which case you can first zip the file and then attach the .zip file.

As always, we would like to hear about bugs, but we would also like to hear suggestions about information that would be useful to see in reports, or to see other examples of how you visualize your InVEST results. This feedback can help inform how we design future reports.

Please feel free to provide general feedback in this thread. Or, if you have a specific question about a report that you generated, please start a “New Topic” and share your report there.

Happy Modeling,
~ NatCap Software Team
