Hi, I’m new to inVEST and my team wants to use the coastal vulnerability model (CVM) on hybrid shore for coastal protection. However, CVM geomorphology categories do not include hybrid solutions, such as seawalls with mangroves, as well as other natural system such as coral reefs (one grey solution with two green solutions). May I check if there is a way to adopt CVM for that? Also, can CVM be used at 10m resolution? Thank you!
Welcome to the forum @S.Song!
It is up to you to define the geomorphology categories that you use, the model is very flexible, it does not prescribe any in particular. The User Guide and sample data provide examples of typical geomorphology types, but if you have seawalls with mangroves, then your input layer will have sections of the coastline defined as seawalls with mangroves, and you’ll provide your own rankings as to how much protection they provide.
As for resolution, in general we recommend that it be no smaller than the resolution of your smallest-resolution input. So if, for example, your smallest resolution input is the DEM at 30m, then we recommend using the model at no smaller than 30m. That said, really we usually recommend not going smaller than around 100m. The model is very simple, and all of the values are relative, and if you use a really small resolution like 10m, that might give a false sense of precision that is not warranted by the simplicity of the model. Also, if you’re working on a relatively large area, it will take a very long time to run at 10m.
